Sacred Valley and Cusco, Peru Travel Guide: SIMPLi’s Top Tips & Insights

Once the heart of the Incan empire, the Cusco region of Peru is a vibrant blend of history, culture, and breathtaking landscapes. Nestled in the Andes, it serves as a gateway to some of the most iconic sights in Peru. From magnificent ruins to old towns, to delicious food rich in tradition and flavor, Cusco and the Sacred Valley are full of adventure and culinary delights. Here are some of our recommendations to explore Cusco and its surroundings on an unforgettable journey!

VISIT

CUSCO

City Tour: Tambomachay, Puca Pucara, Q’enqo, and Sacsayhuaman

Start your adventure with a tour of the historical sites surrounding Cusco, offering a great introduction to the rich heritage of the Inca civilization.

  • Tambomachay, also known as the "Bath of the Inca," is a well-known archaeological site featuring ceremonial baths and aqueducts. Believed to have been a place of worship for water as well as an ancient spa or military outpost, the sacred springs still flow today and are a great reflection of Incan architectural talent.
  • Puca Pucara was one of the first fortresses that served as a military outpost during the Inca empire, its strategic location providing defense for the region and a resting place for travelers. If you visit the ruins in the late afternoon or evening, keep an eye out for the red hues that are supposed to change the color of the walls around sunset.
  • Q’enqo is a mysterious complex of ruins with labyrinth-like caves and sacrificial altars, where it is believed that the Incas performed religious rituals.
  • The impressive Sacsayhuaman site is an engineering marvel, overlooking Cusco with its massive stone walls (some weighing over 100 tons!). During the Inca empire, it served as both a defensive military fortress and as well as the site of the famous Inti Raymi festival honoring the Sun God.
SACRED VALLEY

Maras Salt Mines
A trip to the Sacred Valley would be incomplete without visiting the Maras Salt Mines. These striking terraces have been in use since pre-Inca times to harvest salt. Thousands of salt pools cascade down the hillside, creating a unique, breathtaking landscape. The salt, harvested by hand using ancient methods, is prized for its purity, health benefits, and delicious flavor. As you walk through the salt ponds, you can witness local families and co-ops working together to extract salt using traditional methods that have been passed down for generations.

We are proud to work with Maras salt producer Yolada Acurio Mendoza to create our line of delicious SIMPLi salts. Read more about the history of these salt ponds and the harvesting process here!

Ollantaytambo
Ollantaytambo is one of the most well-preserved Inca towns in Cusco, Peru. Its cobblestone streets, still in use today, offer a glimpse into the past. Here, the Temple of the Sun is the centerpiece—a stunning structure that aligns perfectly with the solstices, showcasing the Incas' astronomical expertise. The Temple of Water, with its cascading fountains and irrigation channels, displays their advanced understanding of hydraulic engineering. Climbing the terraces of this ancient fortress provides not only a sense of history but also panoramic views of the beautiful Sacred Valley below.

Chincheros District
Known as the birthplace of the rainbow, the Chincheros district is a quaint Andean village rich in tradition. The town is famous for its colorful textiles, with women often seen weaving intricate patterns using natural dyes. You can visit a Peruvian weaving cooperative to see the meticulous process firsthand and even pick up a handwoven souvenir. Chincheros is also home to a beautiful colonial church, built atop Inca foundations, and offers stunning views of snow-capped mountains in the distance.

Pisaq
A town nestled in the Sacred Valley, Pisaq is a must-visit for its impressive Inca terraces, originally used as agricultural platforms. The town is also renowned for its craftsmanship and artisan markets where you can find vibrant textiles, pottery, and silverware that make for perfect souvenirs. The hilltop Pisaq ruins offer a glimpse into ancient Inca farming practices and religious life, with breathtaking views over the Sacred Valley.

Moray
One of the more striking Inca sites is Moray, an ancient agricultural testing ground. The site features concentric circular terraces, which create distinct microclimates at each level. It’s believed that the Incas used Moray to experiment with crops, developing different strains suited for the varied climates of the empire. Although there are still many mysteries surrounding this site, the sheer size and scope of these circular formations is a sight to behold and provides a glimpse into the agricultural wisdom of the Incan empire.

Aguas Calientes and Machu Picchu

Lastly, no trip to Cusco and the Sacred Valley is complete without visiting the famous Machu Picchu, the crown jewel of Inca architecture. Your journey begins in Aguas Calientes, a charming town nestled in the jungle. From here, you can take the bus or hike up to Machu Picchu, where the awe-inspiring ruins are perched on a mountaintop, surrounded by lush greenery and mist-covered peaks.

The Lost City of the Incas is as mystical as it is monumental. As you explore the temples, plazas, and terraces, it’s easy to see why this site remains one of the most iconic symbols of ancient civilization. Don’t miss the climb up Huayna Picchu or the Sun Gate for a panoramic view of the site!

The best time to visit Machu Picchu is during the dry season (May to September) when the weather is sunny and ideal for trekking, though it can be crowded, especially in June through August. For a balance of good weather and fewer tourists, the shoulder seasons (April-May and September-October) are excellent, offering lush landscapes and more tranquil experiences. The rainy season (November to March) brings fewer crowds, but with more rain, especially in January and February there is a risk of Machu Picchu being closed.
